For about ten years now, there’s been a surge in the popularity of lower back tattoos, especially among young women. There are some health concerns regarding lower back tattoos in the medical field. For a while, doctors have refused to administer epidurals to women who had this tattoo. There was concern about the penetration of ink into the epidural space. However, a number of women who have lower back tattoos have safely given birth while using epidural blocks, and have suffered no side effects. Anesthesiologists still avoid this area when administering blocks, just to be on the safe side, which also keeps the tattoo from being damaged by scar tissue.
